The significance of the number 4 is a good reason to identify 4 assurances of a bright future. It was on the fourth day that God created the universe as we know it, placing in the heavens the sun, moon, and stars. And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so (Genesis 1:14-15 ESV). With this day of creation, the Lord created time, making it possible for mankind to measure the day and night, the passing of years, and the changing of seasons.
1. Time was created for us. The Lord doesn’t need time. His concept of time is forever until forever. He has always been and will always be. It is only humanity that numbers the hours and recognizes life is for a limited number of days and years. Because of time, we can plan and anticipate. We can dream of what we might be and make plans to fulfill our dreams. Time encourages us to anticipate the future, knowing God will be with us tomorrow in the same way He was with us yesterday and today. Without Him, time doesn’t exist. With Him, time is eternal.
2. The night lights were created for us. From the beginning the Lord determined we would not be left in darkness, that there would be light to guide our way. The Lord is the God of light, not darkness. The moon and stars were a gift to us that we would not be in utter darkness, unable to see a way through. Psalms 139 affirms that the night is not dark to the Lord. It has always been in God’s design to deliver us from the darkness. We do not have to live in darkness, for God is Light.
3. Day and night were created for us. God intended for His creation to have rest, to have sun, to flourish with the newness of another day. He anticipated our need for rest and made it possible for us to sleep in the comfort of a moonlit sky, to be renewed and restored, ready to rise to new opportunities. Because He does not sleep, we can sleep. Because He has a plan for each day, we can awaken with anticipation of what the day will bring.
4. Seasons were marked off for us. The Lord not only created the changing seasons, He promises to sustain them. He did not need summer, autumn, winter, and spring–He created the seasons for us! And in a general sense, as each season ends, we are ready for the next, to see the beginning of life in spring, to enjoy the sunshine of summer, to revel in the colors of fall, to slow down in the fresh cold air of winter. He is a God of change, a God of creativity, a God of new beginnings, and encourages us to accept His offer of a fresh start with each new season. He invites us to venture with Him through the seasons of the year, and through the seasons of life, to discover the bright future He has planned for us.
The fourth day of creation wasn’t an accident. The Lord executed the creation of time for you and me. Every night and every day, every month and every year, and every season with its unique beauty, is for us. The fourth day was a day of assurance. The Lord can be trusted with our todays and our tomorrows. He created them, and He sustains them.
