Merry Christmas! Presents under the tree, snow on the hills, our family singing carols around a piano–this is the kind of Christmas we dream to have. Yet we celebrate a birth that took place in a staple. No piano, no snow, no Christmas tree or gifts. No family near by.
Christmas is merry, not because we have Christmas traditions to enjoy, but because Christmas brought us a Savior. Because of Christmas we can enjoy this day as a child of God, as a sister or brother of our Lord Jesus, freed from the power of sin, and freed to receive all the spiritual gifts of heaven.We have been let in on God’s gracious plan for the world, and because of that we know who we are in Jesus and what we are living for.
As if this isn’t enough, from the moment we trusted in Jesus, God sealed us to Himself with the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives every day. God has promised to bring us to fulfillment of His plan for us, and has prepared an inheritance for us.
Christmas is merry because God sent us a Savior, Jesus, who lived to show us God’s love, who died to show us God’s love, and who lives again to assure us that God’s love is sufficient to see us through this life and all of eternity.
If we have Jesus, we have all we need for a very merry Christmas. So today, I say to you, in the name of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ,
