He loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.
God is righteous and just. He discerns righteousness in the world, and He rejoices in it. He recognizes justice and knows who is just and who is not. God knows we cannot be righteous, or just, apart from Him. Therefore, He expects to find righteousness and justice where His people are, those who have come to Him in Christ, to whom He has imparted His righteousness and His desires for justice.
Do we in Christ understand what delight we can give to our King when we are righteous? Do we comprehend the joy our God has in our justice toward the peoples of the world? Do we not long to see our Lord’s smile upon our lives in response to our commitment to these two concerns of our God? Surely this is what we desire for our lives this very day.
Where is it that He would have us live in righteousness this day? Where is it that He would have us bring justice? We might be stunned at how easy it is for us to take a stand for righteousness and justice. Or we may be surprised at how many foes rise up against us in our commitment to righteousness and justice. Regardless of what we face, our God is still counting on His beloved children to bring these things that He loves to the world in which we live. He is prepared to go with us into any situation for He knows exactly what we will face this day.
We cannot forget that righteousness and justice are outcomes of the steadfast love of God. How does God love us? By imparting His righteousness to us in Christ. How does God give us justice? Through His perfect understanding and judgment. In Christ we are freed to let the love of God saturate every aspect of our lives, that His love might overflow in righteous living and just actions toward others.
You have a mighty arm; strong is your hand, high your right hand. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you. Blessed are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, O LORD, in the light of your face, who exult in your name all the day and in your righteousness are exalted. Psalm 89:13-16 (ESV)
